Descent is easy, like any mountain you descend, descent is easy. That is why the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, says: 'The Fire is surrounded by desires.' It is something that is, on the contrary, appealing to a person to descend. Some people have misconceptions, saying, 'By Allah, the person's affairs are easy, meaning he is on the right path, his affairs are going well.' No, sometimes ease is not a criterion for right and wrong. Ease may be a criterion that you are on a wrong path. The proof is the action itself: is it right or wrong? Do I possess legitimacy from revelation regarding the correctness of the action or its error? As for ease and hardship, they are not evidence. The path of good may be difficult, and the path of evil may be easy. That is why Allah Almighty says: 'And We will ease him toward the difficult.' There are people whom Allah Almighty eases toward the difficult; he finds that the path of error is made easy for him because he has accumulations of errors, so the Quran begins, Allah Almighty eases for him the path of disobedience. That is why they say, 'So-and-so's affairs are easy.' No, his affairs being easy does not mean he is on the correct path. Sometimes this ease is the ease of descent.
