O Muslims, two great and major diseases have become widespread among people, and in the view of many people, they are two minor matters. As for the first of them, it is backbiting. A man stands up and mentions his brother with what he dislikes to be mentioned with, whether it is an action or a trait. You find his greatest concern in gatherings is to object to the servants of Allah, as if he were appointed to spread their faults and track their private matters. And whoever dominates by spreading people's faults and tracking their private matters, Allah will dominate over him someone who will spread his faults and track his private matters. You find him saying, 'So-and-so has such-and-such, and so-and-so has such-and-such,' describing them with a defect, whether it is immorality, lying, tallness, shortness, obesity, thinness, or anything similar that a person dislikes to be described with. If this speaker were to search within himself, he would find himself to be the most flawed of people, the worst in character, and the weakest in trustworthiness. This man who dominates over the servants of Allah is ominous to himself and ominous to his companions. He is ominous to himself as he leads it to evil and transgression, and ominous to his companions because his companion, if he does not denounce him, becomes a partner with him in the sin, even if he does not say anything. O Muslims, beware of backbiting.
