It is that the absence of a contemporary term does not mean the absence of a contemporary idea. Indeed. Some people, when they approach the Quran, look for ideas through the gateway of specific terms. If they do not find them, they assume that the ideas behind them are not present in the Quran. I think this is the biggest problem. Yes, this is a major problem. For example, if you ask someone, 'Did the Quran talk about the patterns of interest in international relations?' He would say, 'No, it did not talk about that.' He did not search for the idea, but he is tied to the term itself. Because the Quran did not use the term 'patterns of interest,' he believes the Quran did not talk about the patterns of interest. Or, for example, if you asked him, 'Did the Quran talk about the balance of power, the balance of terror, or the balance of deterrence?' He would say, 'No, the Quran did not talk about these ideas.' Why? Because he expects the Quran to use these terms to realize that the Quran talked about these ideas. No, these are our contemporary terms. It is not necessary for the Quran to use them. For example, did the Quran talk about wishful thinking? Yes, it talked about it. Did it talk about thinking patterns? Yes. Did it talk about personality types? Yes. Many ideas, we believe the Quran did not talk about them because we expect it to use terms we know, and we believe it will not express them except through these terms. I remember the Iranian thinker Abdolkarim Soroush saying, 'The Quran did not talk about authority.' How did the Quran not talk about authority? If you mean the term, yes, it did not talk about authority, but the fact that it did not talk about the term does not mean it did not talk about the idea. Right? When God Almighty says about David, peace be upon him, 'And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and discernment in speech.' Strengthening his kingdom is a general idea related to authority, right? Correct. 'And their affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves,' this is also related to authority. All the verses related to war and peace, the verses related to David, peace be upon him, the verses related to 'And the command of Pharaoh was not right,' here it talks about his authority, how he managed authority. So the Quran talks about authority using different terms. Here is another important point: the Quran sometimes talks about ideas using terms we are not accustomed to. How? For example, we are accustomed to the term 'tyrant.' Right? To express political tyranny. Yes. But when you search the Quran, it does not mention the word 'tyrant.' So it might occur to someone that it did not talk about tyranny. It is true that it mentioned tyrannical phenomena, Pharaoh and others, but what is the term that parallels 'tyrant'? Perhaps a person searches and searches, does not find that the Quran mentioned 'tyrant,' so he says the Quran did not address this concept, even though it is one of the most dangerous social concepts. Because many societies collapsed due to tyranny. Correct. So how can the Quran, which came as guidance for people and came to guide to that which is most upright, not address the most dangerous social phenomena, which is political tyranny, using a specific term? But the truth is that the Quran talks about it; it has a term that parallels the term 'tyrant,' which is the term 'Jabbar' (compeller/tyrant). 'Indeed, within it are a people of tyrants.' You know? 'And you are not over them a tyrant. So remind by the Quran.' The 'Jabbar' is the one who forces people to obey him, compels people to obey him. You know? This parallels the term, the term 'tyrant'.
