Ascent is difficult, and therefore, often, the Quran expresses the idea of Jihad (struggle) as 'Strive with them,' because effort is the exertion of hardship. Now, what makes you fall completely to the bottom—if we may use the expression—is a free fall. It is not just one step, two, three, or four, and then you return and advance. No, a free fall is Shirk (polytheism). If you fall into Shirk, you have fallen in a free fall. This expression was used by the Quran itself: 'And he who associates others with Allah - it is as though he had fallen from the sky.' Look at the expression: 'as though he had fallen from the sky.' A free fall, 'and the birds had snatched him, or the wind had carried him down into a remote place.' You have no escape, meaning there is no salvation, because Shirk is your end, the end of your opportunity in life, unless you repent to Allah, the Almighty. But whoever falls into Shirk, all the good deeds they have done are finished. You have simply exited the circle of competition.
